Shalom the Gnome learns emotional intelligence of empathy

In a vibrant forest filled with colorful flowers and singing birds, Shalom the Gnome sits pensively by a sparkling stream. He peers into the water, noticing his reflection but feeling a bit lost. Suddenly, Jesus walks through the glade, His presence radiant, drawing animals and plants alike towards Him.

Jesus: "Hello, Shalom! What troubles you, my friend?"

Shalom: "Oh, Jesus! I feel like I'm juggling so many emotions at once, and sometimes I don't know how to handle them. I want to be a good gnome, spreading peace, but I feel frustrated when things don’t go as planned."Jesus: "Ah, the weight of emotions can indeed feel heavy. But understanding them is key. Tell me, what do you feel in those moments?"

Shalom: "I feel sad when my friends argue, and I worry when I can’t fix their problems. It makes me mad sometimes."

Jesus: "Recognizing your emotions is the first step. It’s okay to feel sad and angry. But what matters is how you respond to those feelings. Instead of fixing everything, sometimes it's better to listen."

Jesus: "Imagine how your friends feel when they are upset. Can you step into their tiny shoes?"

Shalom: "I try, but sometimes it’s hard. I just want to cheer them up!"Jesus: "Empathy is not just about cheer, Shalom; it’s about being present. When others feel understood, it helps them open up."

Shalom: "But how can I practice this? I’m just a little gnome!"

Jesus: "As a gnome, your heart is uniquely equipped for this work. Practice active listening—let your friends express themselves without rushing to a solution. Ask them how they feel, and show them you care."Shalom: "So, when they talk, I should just listen and not worry too much about fixing everything?"Jesus: "Exactly! Listen, validate their feelings, and offer your presence. Sometimes that’s the best gift you can give."

Shalom feels a sense of relief lifting from him as he thinks about this. He remembers the last argument between his gnome friends and how he jumped in wanting to fix everything rather than listening.

Shalom: "Thank you, Jesus! I think I understand now. Instead of trying to change what I can’t, I can be there for them."Jesus: "Yes, my friend. Emotional intelligence, like love, is about being fully aware of oneself and others. It nurtures relationships and brings about shalom—peace and harmony in your world."

As the sun begins to set, casting beautiful shades of orange and pink across the sky, Shalom the Gnome feels a newfound hope swelling in his heart. He realizes that fostering emotional intelligence in himself and others can transform his little community into a place of understanding and support.
